Hockey team putting the league on notice
Last Friday night the Islanders faced the 4th place Edouard-Montpetit Lynx. Oona Emmenegger scored the first Abbott goal in the last minute of the first period. In the second period, Sydney Berta, Laurie Hachez and Emma Piers found the back of the net taking a 4-1 lead after 2 periods. Emma Piers scored her second goal of the game to make the final score 5-1. Only 5 regular season games left. The women’s hockey team sits in 3rd place just 1 point behind Lennoxville.

Women’s Basketball hold their own on home court
The Islanders maintained their slim hold on first place last Friday evening with a 55-34 home win over Edouard Montpetit. After scoring just four points in the first quarter, the Abbott offence started to click in the second quarter as they cruised to their eighth victory in nine league games. Ana Mendez led the Islanders with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Girlie Owusu added 11 to the winning cause.

Men’s Volleyball split weekend action
Last Sunday the 4th place Isles were sitting in 4th place faced off against first place Edouard Montpetit and second place Valleyfield. In their first game against the Lynx the Isles won the first set 25-20 and had 21-20 led in the second set but could not close out the match and lost in 3 sets. In the Isles second match it was a close affair with Abbott taking the first set 31-29 and then losing the second 27-25. In the third set the Isles jumped out to and early 8-2 lead and never looked back winning 15-10.
Matthew Campbell had an inspired day with 14 kills and a stellar 2.11 serve receive ratio and 96% serve efficiency. Joshua Besner led the way on offence with 18 kills and Daniel Semke’s improved middle play was highlighted by 9 kills and 6 blocks.
The Isles now sit in 2nd place in the league with 6 matches remaining. Next league action will be on Valentine ’s Day at Dawson…a fan bus will be leaving from JAC at 18h. Contact any MVB player or coach for details to join the bus!

Men’s Basketball lose at home
On the back end of last Friday night’s double header the Isles faced the Montmorency Nomades. Abbott could not stop the Nomades attack and dug themselves into a 24 – 10 hole at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was more promising for the Isles, as they outscored Montmorency 18-16, but were still trailing 40-28 at half-time. The Isles were competing in the last two quarters but poor shooting and too many quick shots contributed to the Isles’ defeat with the final score of 80-56.
